Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Welcome to the second half of the 2018 school year. For some of you it will be a return and for others it will be a new beginning – To whom I say welcome to this great school community.

As a new face and a new personality within your beautiful school, my family and I have been welcomed with open arms and smiling faces. I'd like to take this early opportunity to introduce myself as the new Relieving Principal of Hannam Vale Public School. My name is Mr Sam Small and I'm very much looking forward to getting to know all the families in the school over the next few weeks.

My family and I are so grateful for your warmth and hospitality. Moving from my role as Principal, Ellerston Public School in the Upper Hunter with my wife and two small boys required no small effort, but, what could be more worthwhile than this? What a beautiful school, Hannam Vale Public is. It is a testament to the staff, students and community.

I will be out in the playground in the mornings and afternoons as much as possible and will also look forward to the first P&C meeting where I can talk to you in a more formal setting. If you would like to meet with me to discuss your child, or anything related to the school, please don't hesitate to make an appointment for a meeting.

An enthusiastic band of 15 students made their way to Wingham for the Small Schools Soccer Gala Day. We had the largest group, the largest tarpaulin! and by far the most amount of support for our team mates!

All students contributed well to the games, putting in their best efforts with spectacular results. We are very proud of them for displaying sportsmanship and supporting their team. By the end of the day, they came away with three wins from five games, tired legs and happy hearts……..

Hannam Vale was well represented by 14 well behaved students who competed in multiple events. Great participation both individually and as a team! Laura received 11yrs Girl Champion, Javier was equal Junior Boy Champion and he also set a new record for the Junior Boys 100m . Victories also in PP6 Relay and the Senior Girls Relay saw great performances from everyone. Congratulations!

Tomato Group cooked up a tasty spaghetti bolognaise dish for us all using herbs and vegetables from the garden.

The gardeners were scattered everywhere as usual. We were maintaining and weeding herb beds, vegetable beds, planting more potatoes, raking and composting. We did not have to water!

Mrs Nicholson was very impressed with the Tomato Group in the kitchen. Top work!

Students in Years 3 – 6 are off to Bago Vineyards on Friday to participate in the Mini Muddies obstacle challenge as a resilience and team work building exercise with the 3MAPS schools. We will be departing from school at 9.15am on Friday and returning around 2.30pm. Students are to wear an old set of clothes and old joggers to school, with a change of clothes, shoes and a towel packed in their bags.

Golf for Sporting Schools

What a great program this has been for our Students. On Fridays, for the past five weeks, they have been receiving tuition from Howard Burrows from the Kew Golf Club. The first four lessons were at school and we thank Howard for his great lessons and providing the equipment needed! Student's putting techniques have been worked and then driving off the tee happened! Students were enthusiastic and beautifully behaved! The program was organised by Jack Newton Junior Golf and "wound up" on the final day with a visit to the Kew Country Club. It was a wonderful day, sincere thanks to the Kew golfers, who supervised the students' golf experience! Students also were treated to a free sausage sizzle and drink, and thanks also to Howard for transporting 11 of the students on the Laurieton United Servicemen's Club Bus. Thanks also to the LUSC. The program was funded by the Sporting Schools Program. What a great team effort!

3MAPS Cross Country/Harmony Day Colour Run

The annual 3MAPS Cross Country and Harmony Day celebrations will be hosted at Hannam Vale Public School with our friends from Herons Creek and Johns River on Friday 23 March. This year, we are incorporating the Colour Run into the celebrations. This means that students will be required to bring along a change of clothes – preferably white as it shows up the colour best! We must warn parents and carers about the mess that the coloured powder can make in your cars when students are collected at the end of the day.

Even though we have had rain, the Lansdowne District PSSA Cross Country will be hosted at Hannam Vale Public School on Tuesday 27th March.

Competing students are reminded to wear their sports uniform to school. Due to recent rain, it would be a good idea to send along a spare pair of clothes and shoes with students too in case things get a bit muddy! Please also remember to bring hats, sunscreen and plenty of water. There will be a sausage sizzle and canteen available for students and parents.

What a wonderful performance at the LDPSSA Swimming Carnival. HVPS took out winning school, both with and without handicap calculations, sharing the lead with Coopernook in the ‘without handicap' calculations. Laura achieved 11 year old Girl Champion, Adam Senior Boy Champion. Andie broke a backstroke record!...and the PP6 relay won convincingly! A great day! All competitors demonstrated great determination and outstanding sportsmanship. Congratulations everyone!

Congratulations to our Relay Team who competed last week at Homebush representing the Hunter District and Hannam Vale at the state championships.

Our PP6 Relay Representatives – John, Adam P., Laura and Andie! What a terrific result! 13th in State! We are very proud of you all! HVPS continues its wonderful sporting record! They came 3^rd in their heat, 5^th in the semi-final and missed out on the final by 0.26 of a second!

Robotics

All students K-6 are currently working on their Robotics projects. A team of 6 will represent Hannam Vale PS at the Regional Robotics Competition to be held a Lake Cathie PS later in the term. K-2 students are working with Bee Bots and are soon to be using Lego WeDo (Later Stage 1/Stage 2). This is a stepping stone toward the Lego Mindstorm EV3 kits.

This wonderful program supported by the NSW DEC, continues to be implemented with the great support from our school community. Mrs Stevenson has introduced us all to important pointers about looking after the horse. Use of equipment and general care were the lesson focus when she brought Pee Wee and Kira in. This lesson was followed up with a visit to the Walungra stables, hosted by Mrs Gail Fowler. Again, we learned about looking after the horses – inside as well as out! A huge thankyou to Gail! On Wednesday K-Y5 head to Bellrowan for a Trail Ride!

We have been invited to attend the Hannam Vale Recreation Reserve on 25th April to take part in the ANZAC ceremony on that day.

Our First Kitchen/Garden for 2017

Under heatwave conditions we undertook a small amount of Garden maintenance .....Thanks to Laurieton Landscape Supplies for the prompt delivery of a load of top soil, which we delved into and top dressed some vegie beds….but the temperature ruled the day, and the Gardeners ended up completing their Tool Licences in the cool of the K-2 Room!

There's a lot to happen in the Garden. The Kitchen group harvested basil and some herbs, but once again, we need to replant, but not right before the hottest temperatures on record hit us!! Kitchen Group – the Tomatoes – cooked up a delicious lunch of basil pesto and rice paper rolls, with a tasty garlic and lime sauce!

In the garden we harvested cabbage, broccoli, herbs, rhubarb, peas, spinach and kale. We talked about the harvest, and how to harvest first.

Next we got busy with garden maintenance in the herb patches, and we are preparing to plant more pumpkins! In so doing, we dug out some composted soil from the base of the compost pile – it is phenomenal! Rich dark soil full of worms and little creatures! A great supplement for our pumpkin mound….

Others were involved in weeding and feeding the plants in the wheelbarrows!

Meanwhile in the kitchen students cooked up a great feast of Spinach and Ricotta Cannelloni , Broccoli in a cheese sauce, Mini Quiches and to finish off Rhubarb Crumble…delicious!

Congratulations on the wonderful costumes students (including pre-schoolers) and parents! Although a bit of a rush – our Book Week Parade was nonetheless a great testament to the wonderful characters that we engage with in books!

Before our Parade, we first wrote a description of our character. After that we set about making piranhas and, in the Book Week theme "About Australian Stories" we used mixed mediums to produce bright Edward and Edwina the Emu portraits!

Thanks to Pamela Cabot , Maria Trafford and Dennis Everingham plus our willing helpers, much was achieved in the garden this week. We harvested cabbages, basil, spinach and rhubarb! We planted beetroot, artichoke, strawberries and cabbage.

The spring humidity and good amounts of rain ( along with some TLC) are combining to produce a bumper crop in our gardens.

Zucchini, rainbow spinach, cucumbers, strawberries....... They are looking good!

Free to good homes this week is zucchini, cucumber, spinach and rhubarb. These will be placed on the blue tables outside our administration block.

Crunching and Sipping

Hannam Vale Public School follows the program Live Life Well @ School.

Part of this program is the Crunch and Sip program. This encourages children to eat fruit and vegetables daily and tosip on water. Hannam Vale PS stops at 10am for all of the students to have a Crunch and Sip break before going back in to their lessons.

CONGRATULATIONS Elen, Connor, Rivah and Sam! 11^th in the State! Fantastic work, and a big thanks to the support crew! What an awesome effort, and such a wonderful experience!

Our team travelled to the NSW State PSSA Athletics championships at the State Athletics Centre in Sydney. Competing against the best in the state, they proved they are a force to be reckoned with.

Books Light Up Our World

On Tuesday last week the spotlight was definitely on book characters as they replaced our students in the classroom. They're Off and Running

Congratulations to Connor, Rivah, Elen and Sam who will represent the Hunter Region at the State PSSA Athletics Carnival in early Term 4. The students will be competing at the State Athletics centre in Homebush Park, Sydney. A fantastic experience for the students to be a part of and we know they will represent our region and our school with pride.
